Origin Of The Springfield Cat Story (It's not true.)

Local Ohio woman posted the wild tale after hearing it from a neighbor, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from their daughter

The rumor is based on a post made in early September to a private Facebook group called “Springfield Ohio Crime and Information”. Facebook user Erika Lee posted that a neighbor had told her that the neighbor's daughter's friend had "lost her cat" and then saw it "hanging from a branch, like you'd do a deer for butchering" at a neighbor's house, insisting "they were carving it up to eat." The now-deleted post further asserted that the same was being done to dogs, ducks, and geese. Lee later told an interviewer, “I’m not sure I’m the most credible source because I don’t actually know the person who lost the cat,” NewsGuard reported.

Seeking to inflame racial tensions and aminos the rumor went viral amongst the Far-Right, Neo Nazis and popular right wing influencers on twitter.

This resulted in bomb threats being made against  public schools and city hall among other locations in Springfield

Remember none of this is true
